Azure API Management
A professional API gateway your consumers can rely on
Azure API Management gives you a secure, policy-driven gateway in front of all your APIs, with rate limiting, OAuth enforcement, a developer portal, and deep observability. We configure and operate APIM for public REST APIs, internal platforms, and everything in between.
End-to-end Azure APIM configuration and operations
API gateway & policy authoring
We configure APIM as a secure front-door for all your APIs, applying rate limiting, IP filtering, JWT validation, OAuth 2.0 enforcement, header transformation, and caching policies without touching your backend code.
Developer portal setup
We configure the Azure APIM developer portal so external partners and internal teams can self-serve API documentation, generate credentials, and test endpoints, reducing support burden on your team.
API products & subscription management
We organise APIs into logical products with tiered access, subscription keys, and usage quotas, allowing you to monetise, gate, or expose APIs to different consumer groups.
Versioning & lifecycle management
We implement versioning strategies (path, header, or query-string based) and deprecation workflows so you can evolve APIs without breaking existing consumers.
Monitoring, analytics & alerting
We integrate APIM with Azure Monitor and Application Insights to give you real-time dashboards on request volume, error rates, latency, and consumer usage, with alerting built in from day one.
Backend connectivity & transformation
We connect APIM to backends across Azure Functions, App Services, AKS, legacy on-prem systems, and third-party APIs, with payload transformation policies where needed.
APIM specialists with real delivery proof
Delivered public-facing REST APIs on APIM
We have completed the full cycle on public REST API projects managed through Azure APIM, from contract design and policy authoring to developer portal configuration and production launch.
Microsoft Solutions Partner
Our Microsoft Solutions Partner designation is backed by verified delivery outcomes and technical assessments. Azure API Management is part of our core Azure practice.
Policy library from real-world projects
We bring a battle-tested library of APIM policies covering auth patterns, caching strategies, cross-origin handling, and transformation logic, reducing build time significantly.
Security first, always
Every APIM deployment we configure includes threat protection, minimum TLS enforcement, managed identity for backend auth, and subscription key rotation guidance, before go-live.
Public REST API delivered on Azure APIM
We recently delivered a full public-facing REST API project for a customer, covering API contract design, Azure APIM policy configuration, developer portal setup, load testing, and production launch. The platform now serves external consumers through a managed, observable, and rate-limited gateway.
We also enhanced the API layer of the UK Livestock Unique Identification System (LUIS), a mission-critical government platform, improving flexibility, security, and interoperability for a service handling over 25 million livestock identification tags annually.
See the Livestock Information case studyOur APIM delivery process
From gateway design to production launch, a structured approach that reduces risk and delivers an APIM configuration your team can own and evolve.
API Inventory & Gateway Design
We audit your existing APIs, identify consumers, and design the APIM topology, including which APIs to expose, which products to create, and what policies are needed for each surface.
Policy Authoring & Backend Integration
We configure APIM instances, author policies for each API operation, and wire up backends. All policies are version-controlled as infrastructure as code (Bicep or Terraform) so changes are reviewable and repeatable.
Developer Portal & Subscription Setup
We customise the developer portal with your brand, configure API products, set up subscription tiers, and validate the end-to-end developer experience, from sign-up to first successful API call.
Go Live, Monitoring & Ongoing Management
We deploy to production, configure monitoring and alerting in Azure Monitor, and hand over operational runbooks. Ongoing APIM management (policy updates, version management, consumer support) is available through our Managed Application Support service.
Frequently asked questions
What tier of Azure API Management should I use?
It depends on your scale and requirements. The Consumption tier suits low-traffic or serverless workloads with variable demand. Developer tier is for non-production use. Standard and Premium tiers add VNet integration, custom domains, and multi-region support. We help you select and right-size the tier based on your expected API traffic and networking requirements.
Can Azure APIM sit in front of legacy or on-premises systems?
Yes, APIM can proxy to any HTTP-accessible backend, including on-premises systems via Azure VPN or ExpressRoute, third-party SaaS APIs, and legacy SOAP services. We can also apply transformation policies to modernise the API surface without touching the backend.
How do you handle API versioning in APIM?
We typically implement URL path versioning (/v1/, /v2/) combined with revision tracking in APIM. This lets you run multiple API versions simultaneously with clear deprecation timelines. We also configure version sets to group related API versions in the developer portal.
Can we manage APIM configuration as infrastructure as code?
Absolutely, and we insist on it. We manage APIM configuration using Bicep or Terraform, with policies stored as XML fragments in source control. This means all gateway configuration is reviewable, testable, and deployable through your CI/CD pipeline.
Do you also build the APIs that sit behind APIM?
Yes. Many engagements cover both the API build and the APIM configuration. See our REST API Development and API & Integration Services pages for the full picture.
