Can Copilot Studio use models from Azure AI Foundry?
Yes. Copilot Studio can be configured to call custom endpoints, including models deployed through Azure AI Foundry. This gives you access to GPT-4o, Phi, Llama, Mistral, and other models hosted within your own Azure tenancy, with full control over versioning, data residency, and cost.
What are the main limitations of Copilot Studio out of the box?
The most common limitations we see are: shallow grounding quality from default connectors, limited model selection, poor support for on-premise or legacy data sources, restricted prompt engineering options, and minimal observability into AI responses. These are solvable with the right architecture.
Should we abandon Copilot Studio or fix it?
It depends on the use case. Copilot Studio provides a strong orchestration layer, Microsoft 365 integration, and enterprise security controls. In many cases, the right move is to keep Copilot Studio as the front end but replace the backend with Azure AI Foundry models and a proper RAG pipeline. RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) is the architecture that connects an AI model to your data so it gives accurate, context-aware answers.
