From Prompt to Production: The Honest Guide to Building Apps with Modern Development Tools
Modern development tools have genuinely changed what’s possible for organisations building software. A motivated person with a clear idea can produce a working prototype in hours, shortcutting weeks of requirements gathering and putting something real in front of stakeholders far earlier than traditional development would allow.
We use these tools ourselves. The productivity gains are significant and we’d encourage any organisation to understand what’s available to them.
But there’s a journey between a working prototype and an operational system your organisation can depend on, and it’s one that catches a lot of teams off guard. This guide is an honest account of that journey – what works, where the risks are, and how to make good decisions at each stage.
Stage 1: Getting started and the value of rapid prototyping
The strongest use case for modern development tools is the early stage of a build. Getting an idea out of your head and into something tangible, quickly.
Traditional software projects often spend weeks or months in discovery and requirements phases before a single line of code is written. These tools collapse that timeline considerably. You can test assumptions, show stakeholders something real, and learn things about your requirements that no amount of documentation would have surfaced.
That’s genuinely valuable and shouldn’t be undersold. Many organisations have been slow to invest in software because the upfront cost and uncertainty felt too high. The ability to validate an idea cheaply before committing to a full build changes that calculus significantly.
The key at this stage is to treat it as exactly what it is: a way of learning quickly. The prototype you build in the first few hours is not the system you’ll run your business on. Keeping that distinction clear sets you up well for everything that follows.
Stage 2: Choosing the right tools and why it matters
Not all development tools are built the same way, and the choices you make at the start have a habit of becoming expensive constraints later.
The tools worth building on are those that generate real, standards-based code underneath. Languages and frameworks that a professional development team would recognise and be able to work with. Tools like Cursor, and others built on established frameworks, give you code you actually own – code that can be version-controlled using Git, exported, inspected, and handed to an external team if your needs outgrow the tool.
Contrast that with tools that generate proprietary outputs or lock your application into a specific platform’s ecosystem. Those tools might be faster to get started with but they significantly limit your options further down the line.
The practical test is straightforward: can you export your code to a standard repository and open it in a professional development environment? If the answer is no, think carefully before building anything you might want to depend on.
This isn’t about being precious about technology. It’s about keeping your options open.
Stage 3: The iteration ceiling
The initial build with these tools tends to feel fast and almost effortless. Features appear quickly, the interface takes shape, and the gap between idea and implementation feels smaller than it ever has.
That pace typically doesn’t last.
As you move beyond the initial prototype into more detailed features, bug fixing, and iterative development, a different pattern emerges. The tool begins making architectural decisions you didn’t explicitly ask for. Design approaches shift between sessions. Attempting to fix one issue introduces another. What felt like momentum starts to feel like maintenance.
This isn’t a flaw, it’s a structural characteristic of how these tools work. They’re optimised for generating new things, not for maintaining and evolving complex systems with accumulated history and constraints.
There are things that help. Providing explicit guidance at the start of each session about the approach you want to maintain. Using structured specification documents to anchor decisions. Being willing to step back and refactor rather than patching forward indefinitely. In some cases, bringing in a developer with the expertise to untangle what’s become complex and establish cleaner foundations before continuing.
The teams who navigate this stage well are the ones who recognise it’s coming and treat it as a normal part of the process rather than a sign that something has gone wrong.
Stage 4: Hosting, deployment and the security risks that come with them
Most modern development tools make it straightforward to deploy your application and have it accessible to real users. Services like Supabase make database setup and hosting feel simple. For sharing a prototype or running an internal demo, this is genuinely useful.
The risk is that simplicity can obscure some significant security considerations.
There have been a substantial number of reported cases where applications built and deployed using these tools have had misconfigured access controls, exposed data through insecure API configurations, or failed to implement appropriate authentication. In many cases this isn’t because the person building the application was careless – it’s because the defaults aren’t always secure by default, and the tool doesn’t necessarily flag the gap.
Our practical guidance is straightforward. For demos, prototypes, and internal collaboration tools that handle no sensitive data, self-hosted deployment using these tools is reasonable and often appropriate. For anything that involves personal data, access to internal business systems, or information that would cause real harm if exposed, the configuration needs to be reviewed properly before anything goes live.
The other consideration is data architecture. Decisions about how data is structured, stored, and accessed are much harder to change once an application is in use. Getting these right early – even in a prototype – saves significant effort later.
Stage 5: Understanding what you’re actually building
This is the stage where the most important decisions get made, and often where the least explicit thinking happens.
There’s a meaningful difference between a demo, an internal tool, a proof of concept, and a business-critical system – and each has different requirements in terms of how it needs to be built, hosted, secured, and supported. The problem is that systems often evolve from one to another without anyone explicitly deciding that the transition has happened.
Something that starts as a prototype gets shared more widely. It becomes useful. People start relying on it. Processes form around it. And at some point it’s a business system, with all the obligations that come with that, but without any of the foundations that would normally accompany a business system.
The right time to make that decision consciously is before it happens, not after.
If there’s any realistic possibility that something will move from internal experiment to operational tool, it’s worth designing with that destination in mind from the start. That doesn’t mean over-engineering a prototype. It means making technology and architectural choices that leave the path open, and being clear-eyed about when the system has crossed a threshold that demands more formal treatment.
Stage 6: Compliance – security, data protection and accessibility
For many organisations, particularly those operating in regulated sectors, working with public data, or serving diverse user groups, compliance isn’t a separate workstream to be addressed at the end of a build. It’s a set of baseline requirements that need to be considered throughout.
The areas that come up most consistently are security, data protection and accessibility.
Security covers a broad range: authentication, authorisation, input validation, data encryption, infrastructure configuration, and vulnerability management. Modern development tools don’t audit for these automatically, and the code they generate doesn’t always reflect best practice in each area.
Data protection under UK GDPR carries specific obligations around how personal data is collected, stored, processed and deleted. Applications that handle personal data need to be designed with those obligations in mind, not retrofitted to meet them later.
Accessibility under the Equality Act and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) applies more broadly than many organisations realise. Interfaces generated by development tools often produce reasonable accessibility as a starting point but rarely meet the standard required for public-facing services or employee-facing systems in larger organisations without further attention.
None of this is insurmountable, but it does require deliberate attention. The organisations that handle this well are the ones who treat compliance as a design consideration from the beginning rather than a checklist at the end.
Stage 7: Operational ownership – the question most builds can’t answer
This is the stage that separates systems that organisations can genuinely depend on from those that create risk over time.
When something becomes part of how your organisation works, a set of questions becomes important that didn’t matter during the prototype phase. Why was it built the way it was? What decisions were made and why? Who understands how it works? Who can make changes to it safely? What happens when something goes wrong? Who is responsible for keeping it up to date and secure?
In a professionally delivered software project, these questions have explicit answers: documented architecture, version-controlled code with a clear history, defined support arrangements, and accountability for ongoing maintenance.
In many internally-built tools the answers are informal at best. The system works because one person understands it. The documentation lives in that person’s head. The support model is “ask the person who built it.” This is workable until it isn’t – and the moment it stops working is rarely a convenient one.
Operational ownership isn’t just about support. It’s about institutional continuity. If the person who built a system moves on, the organisation needs to be able to understand, maintain and evolve it without them. That requires deliberate decisions about documentation, code quality, hosting, and support arrangements.
For any system that’s become genuinely important to how your organisation operates, it’s worth asking honestly whether those foundations are in place.
When to bring in professional support
None of this is an argument against building internally. Organisations that are experimenting with these tools, building prototypes, testing ideas and developing internal capability are doing the right thing, and the tools available to them are genuinely powerful.
The question is recognising when a build has moved beyond what those tools and internal capability can reliably support.
In our experience, the inflection points tend to be: when security and compliance requirements need to be properly validated; when the codebase has become complex enough that iteration is slow and unpredictable; when the system is being depended on by real users and processes; and when operational ownership needs to be formalised.
At those points, bringing in an experienced team doesn’t mean starting again. It often means establishing proper foundations under something that already exists, filling the gaps that the tools don’t cover, and putting the right structures in place for the long term.
